Rustic red wine from France
This 2009 Barrejat Madiran has an excellent rustic feel due to the combination of Cabernet and Tannat. These are two red wine grapes that are native to southwestern France and are often blended in the wines of Madiran, Irouleguy and various other appellations of the Southwest. Both Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are softer than Tannat and are used to preserve the wine in its youth making it more accessible and adding complexity to the mix. Due to the participation of tannate, such mixtures are rather serious and dense, but at the same time have a good structure, with plenty of aromas of sweet spices and red and black fruits such as plum and blackcurrant.
The Chateau Barrejat is a rather small winery with only about 40ha of vineyards. Of this area, 60% are planted with Tannat vines and 40% with Cabernet vines. Since 1960 this winery is cultivated in an extremely gentle way and exclusively using natural materials. Therefore, the annual yield is a maximum of 55 hectoliters per hectare.
