Mysterious red wine mix
Although they are usually complex, many rare red wine blends have some patterns. Many are regional twists on the classic Bordeaux blends. By adding their local grape varieties to a base Cabernet-Merlot blend, many regions have successfully expanded their wines' appeal while maintaining a certain regionality. In Italy, this is done with local specialties such as Sangiovese, Montepulciano and even Trentio's idiosyncratic Lagrein. In Austria it is achieved with Zweigelt or Blaufrankisch, and sometimes both. So also with the Thallern red selection, which exists beside Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot also from Zweigelt.
The range of possible mixtures that are not unambiguously assignable, is large. Let yourself be surprised by this mysterious Austrian.
For this 2012 thallern red selection we would
recommend A juicy beef steak in red wine sauce.
