An endangered Gutedel
The Chasselas is a relatively old white wine variety, which enjoyed worldwide popularity in its high phase and in addition to the use of white wine was also in demand as a table grape. Today, this grape variety is grown only very sporadically, with the main growing area limited to Switzerland. On the vine Gutedel tends to mature early, which fits the cool Alpine slopes of Switzerland. It can be a very vigorous and over-productive vine if not properly controlled, possibly contributing to its bad reputation outside of Switzerland. This could also be the reason that the wines based on Gutedel seem quite neutral. The best examples, however, are complex and rich, displaying a range of fruity, floral and mineral aromas with good acidity. So enjoy an excellent Gutedel.
For this 2017 Behringer we would
Recommend cheese fondue or mushroom pate.
